Facility Inspections
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a B- for our inspections rating. In fact, the facility received very impressive inspection report this year. Our inspection ratings are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these reports. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to patient safety. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Lastly, this nursing home was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. This is generally a really bad sign. We would never recommend this facility.
Long-term Care Quality
We were also surprised to find that this facility earned a solid long-term care rating this year. We gave it a B- in that area. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 96.94118 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 3.17 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is somewhat concerning, this statistic can be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
Our next area we analyzed was short-term care, where this nursing home received an F. In crafting our short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. With a grade of this caliber in this category, we were not surprised to discover that this nursing home was below average in multiple staffing figures we focus on. It offered substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 43 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
The last category we analyzed was nursing. It received an F in this area, which is a poor grade. When calculating our nursing grades, we analyze both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provided only 3.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These scores pulled down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
