Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of C. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. This facility was hit with 7 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies to create an imminent threat to resident safety or health. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also didn't perform too badly in the category of short-term care. Indeed, we awarded it a C for that area, which ended up being another one of its more respectable scores. Our short-term care scores are believed to be most important for individuals in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing services. This means not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The key is determining what effect this had on quality of care. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 5.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. This figure was below average.

Long-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility only earned a D for its long-term care rating, which is not a score to write home about. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is an above average statistic. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Nurse Quality
The next area we graded was nursing. This facility received a rock bottom grade of F in that area. We weighed the skill-level of nurses at the facility, as well as the quantity of time the nurses worked with patients, in calculating our rating in this area. This nursing home provided only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. In addition to ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating quite a bit.
