Facility Inspections
It should be noted that this facility's inspection score outpaced its overall grade. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for its inspections rating, which is one of our better scores. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor dings aren't necessarily something to panic about.
Short-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's better category grades came in the area of short-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B+. It actually performed better than most nursing homes in this area. Short-term care scores are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from the nursing home. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Indiana with 57.8 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we assessed was long-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of B- in this area. If you are seeking anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care ratings. After we finished assessing the amount of nursing care, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to discover that this facility vaccinates 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. This nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. While it had 2.18 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes due to it having more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
The next area we rated was nursing. This facility was given a grade of C for the area. Our nursing score considers numerous data points. The most important factor is the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
