Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection grade. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite minor. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This means CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility also fared well in the area of long-term care. In fact, we awarded it a score of A- in that category, which happens to be one of our best grades. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 98.51852 percent of its patients, which is higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

In our next category, we gave this nursing home a rock-bottom F in the category of short-term care. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to formulate a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Considering its grade in this category, we were not stunned to discover that this nursing home is well below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

Turning to our final area, this facility did not perform well. Due to a very poor grade of F in nursing, this was its worst area. In computing a nursing home's nursing rating, we consider the number of hours nurses commit to patients and the level of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This facility fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
