In addition to performing well overall, this facility received even higher grades for short-term care. In fact, it earned one of our best grades in that category with A-. In calculating these short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. However, based on the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this facility. We found that 5.7 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.

Adding to its impressive category grades, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite insignificant. This place was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to resident health or safety. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Turning to another strength for this facility, we awarded them one of our more favorable grades in our long-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. When nursing homes receive this type of score in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not take any chances. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

The next category we analyzed is nursing. We gave it a C in that area. This is a decent grade in this area. When computing our nursing grades, we analyze both nursing hours and the training levels of those nurses. This facility averages just 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which is well below average. Lastly, we also assessed several nursing quality measures. Although this place got dinged a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality metrics. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it did very well in this statistic. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a resident even once per day.
