Long-term Care Quality
On top of its strong overall score, we gave this facility an impressive grade of A+ for our long-term care rating. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 98.993965 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly is often a dangerous illness for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't take any chances. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.06 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection grades weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this category usually have few severe deficiencies. This facility was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. In computing a facility's nursing score, we weigh the number of hours nurses are with residents as well as the level of skill of the nurses. With 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient daily, this place surpassed the national average. We also look at the qualifications of nurses and apply more weight to hours worked by skilled nurses. Lastly, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these statistics. With fewer than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed well in this area. This is usually a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning a patient more frequently.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at is short-term care. It received a lowly F in this category, which is a poor score. We would not simply disregard a facility as a result of a single concerning score though. Short-term care ratings are vital for prospective residents requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more skilled nursing. This means a wide scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 36.2 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
