Facility Inspections
While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall score, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this nursing home's second most favorable category is long-term care. As it turns out, with a D in this category, it still fared somewhat poorly. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means the facility didn't perform well in our measures relating to patient care. After assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. Candidly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this facility vaccinated 82.3219 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be quite a few points less than average. To our surprise, this place actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.

Short-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at was short-term care, in which this facility received an F. Our short-term care grades are probably more important for patients in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically requires additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Based on its poor rating in this area, we weren't stunned to find this place offers far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 4.7 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The last category we scored is nursing, in which this nursing home was given an abysmal grade in this category as well. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is definitely a major concern. In computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we assess the number of hours nurses commit to patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This nursing home averaged only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is not a very impressive figure. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this area. This is a bad sign in light of the fact that so many pressure ulcers could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
