Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility outperformed its overall score in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest grades in this area with an A. Our inspection grades are tied to many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
Additionally, we awarded this nursing home a B in our short-term care category. This happens to be one of our more favorable scores. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. We were extremely impressed to find that this facility offers its residents substantially more physical therapist hours than most other nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation with 56.4 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B in that category, which happens to be one of our better. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.85 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this category, this number can be skewed for some facilities due to some of the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our last area, this facility received a C for nursing, which we consider to be a respectable grade. We assessed the licensure of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses worked with residents, in determining our rating in this area. This nursing home provides only 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a somewhat concerning figure as it is well below average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the number of hours of care offered.
