While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a C for that category, which is one of our better scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This tells you inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to present an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.

This facility's second highest score is long-term care, but it still earned a grade of just D in that area. This still happens to be a relatively poor score. Nursing homes that don't fare well in long-term care typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in some of the areas of routine personal care we looked at. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this facility administered the vaccine to just 78.97934 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this place was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.

Sadly, this facility's third best category was short-term care. However, with a D in this area, it still performed somewhat badly. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Given its grade in this category, we weren't surprised to find that this place was well below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we looked at. Frankly, this was about what we expected to find. The last item we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics was damning for this facility's short-term care score.

The next category we graded is nursing. It received an F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. Nursing ratings are largely tied to the facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home averaged a meager 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This place was above average in two of the metrics we focus on, with good marks for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These statistics are typically reliable measures of the quality of nursing care available.
