Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

We also wanted to point out that this nursing home earned near flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A+ in this category. Inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

On the list of its many dominant scores, this facility was awarded a strong short-term care score. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in this area. Short-term care grades are generally used to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that 6.2 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A-. There are quite a few datapoints included in this grade. Many of these criteria are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last category we looked at is long-term care. We awarded this nursing home one of our more favorable grades in this category, with a B. While this is not as dominant as some of its other grades, it is still a positive score. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.749374 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
