This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its nearly flawless inspection reports in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Our inspection scores are tied to several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.

We also gave this facility a decent grade in the category of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. Long-term care grades focus on a facility's personal care instead of the highly skilled therapy and medical services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is better than most nursing homes. Lastly, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Moving on to the category of short-term care, this facility was given just a D in that area. In determining our short-term care ratings, we analyze a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This score is generally a reliable measure of a facility's rehabilitation services. With its score in this category, we weren't stunned to discover that this place is well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we looked at. Honestly, this was what we expected here. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents that were able to return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.

Turning to the last category, this nursing home did not fare well. With a rock bottom grade of F in nursing, this was its poorest category. Nursing scores are based in large part on nurse staffing levels. This nursing home offered just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This statistic is quite a bit below the national average. On top of ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These scores pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
