Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A+. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This facility was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's second highest area turned out to be its short-term care grade, where it received a B-. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the country with 53.1 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most facilities.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next most favorable category was long-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a C. Our long-term care ratings are more meaningful for folks needing more traditional services associated with personal care. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is higher than most nursing homes. This place keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.29 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
The next area we looked at is nursing, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest category. We gave this facility a D in this category. The nursing grade weighs a handful of subcategories, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility.
