In addition to receiving a strong overall grade, this facility also earned an elite short-term care grade. We awarded them one of our higher grades in that area, with an A. In the category of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country with 70.1 percent of its patients returning home.

Turning to another one of this nursing home's strengths, it also earned a very impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections turned out to be one of its best categories. We gave this facility an A. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few relatively minor dings are not the end of the world.

The next highest grade we gave this nursing home came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of B-. This wasn't quite as good as some of its other scores, but a grade in this range is not the end of the world. When determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the amount of time nurses commit to patients and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home averages 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The final area we looked at was long-term care. This facility received a favorable long-term care score this year, with a B-. Even though this is not as strong as some of its other category grades, this is nevertheless an acceptable rating for this category. Our long-term care grade assesses a nursing home's personal care rather than the highly skilled nursing or healthcare services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. After considering the volume of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinated 96 percent of its residents for pneumonia. This nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
