Although we gave this nursing home a poor overall grade, we awarded it a B for our inspections category. This was the result of the facility receiving a quality inspection report this year. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid places with a bunch of severe deficiencies flagged. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

This facility also didn't perform poorly in the category of short-term care. Indeed, we awarded it a grade of B- in that area, which ended up being among its more respectable grades. In the category of short-term care, we strive to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. We found that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. It offered fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was a much stronger area for this facility. This place outperformed most nursing homes in this metric with 58.4 percent of its patients returning home. This really helped its grade in this area.

Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. Our nursing score weighs quite a few factors, however, the paramount consideration is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. With just 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient per day, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were far below average. This facility also had terrible scores in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this area. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This metric helped pull down this facility's nursing score quite a bit.

Long-term Care Quality

The last area we scored is long-term care, where this nursing home received a poor grade here as well. It received an abysmal F in this category, which is definitely a major disappointment. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinated 97.32442 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is not nearly as favorable than its vaccination record.
