Facility Inspections
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a B- for our inspections rating. In fact, the facility received very impressive inspection report this year. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We also would like to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home received an F for its short-term care grade. In computing our short-term care scores, we scrutinize a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is frequently a meaningful assessment of the facility's rehabilitation services. Given its score in this area, we were not surprised to discover that this facility was well below average in terms of the number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we looked at. Honestly, this was about what we expected to find. The final statistic we looked at in this category is the number of residents who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 40.8 percent of its patients returning home. This was quite a bit below the national average.
Nurse Quality
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. The nursing grade includes many factors, however, the most important one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home offered a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident each day. On top of ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at about 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics helped pull down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we scored was long-term care. We gave it an F for this category, which is a poor score. For prospective residents looking for a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 95.736435 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.59 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
