Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. We believe that one of the most critical factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. In this regard, we especially look at the severity of the deficiencies. This facility received 10 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. In that area, we gave this facility an C. There are a host of factors within this category. Many of these datapoints relate to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Although this place didn't really impress in terms of the quantity of nursing care available, it actually performed admirably in a few of our quality measures. It was above average in two of the areas we assess, with good scores for minimizing its patients' major falls and pressure ulcers. These statistics are good measures of the quality of nursing care provided since many falls and bed sores are preventable.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed is short-term care. This facility's received a low-end short-term care score where it received a lowly F. Our short-term care scores are critical for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. With a grade in this range in this category, we were not surprised to learn that this nursing home was below average in multiple staffing figures we assess. In fact, it supplied substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other nursing homes. The last metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 32.7 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was long-term care, where this nursing home was given an abysmal score in this area as well. It received a lowly F in this category, which is definitely somewhat alarming. If you are looking for services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. After considering the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination records. We were pleased to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 97.83198 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this place also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had just 0.92 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
