Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also performed favorably in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a score of A-. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 99.32886 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave this to chance. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
The next area we looked at was nursing, where we gave this facility an F. This was definitely one of this facility's major weaknesses. We looked at the qualifications of nurses working for the nursing home, as well as the quantity of time those nurses worked with residents, in computing our grade in this category. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This nursing home performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these statistics to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we rated was short-term care. We gave it an abysmal F in this category, which is a very poor score. This is clearly a major concern. In the category of short-term care, we strive to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, we learned that this place provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. The last item we considered in this category is the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3.4 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below average.
