Facility Inspections
This nursing home received a quality overall score as described above, but we especially want to emphasize its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave it an A+ in this area. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Contributing to this nursing home's list of achievements, it also was given a superb long-term care score. We gave them a dominant grade of A- in this area. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 95.68345 percent of its residents, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.9 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this statistic may be skewed for some facilities due to some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
Additionally, this facility also was awarded favorable short-term care scores this year. Indeed, we gave it one of our stronger scores in that category, with a score of B. In computing our short-term care grades, we assess a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This area is generally a reliable measure of the facility's rehabilitation. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be a real strength for this facility. This place outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country with 68.3 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the final category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of D in our nursing category. This was the nursing home's worst category grade. Sadly, this category pulled down the nursing home's overall profile to some degree. We assessed the levels of nurses at the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses spent with residents, in computing our score in this area. With a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident daily, this place's nurse staffing levels were far below the national average. Unfortunately, this nursing home also didn't perform as well as we had hoped in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at for this category.
