Facility Inspections
We want to point out that this nursing home outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in this area with an A. Inspection grades account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to be an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor dings aren't something to panic about.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this facility a B in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our more favorable scores. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 77.192986 percent of its residents, which is a bit lower than we expected. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, at least this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality
This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. We weighed the levels of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses spent with residents, in calculating our score in this area. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures. Although this facility got dinged a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality-based measures. With less than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed well in this area. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of turning a patient even once per day.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we looked at is short-term care. We gave this nursing home a D for the area of short-term care, leaving this as the facility's worst category grade. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 5.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics sunk this nursing home's short-term care grade.
