Nurse Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Our nursing grade consists of many components, however, the primary one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This place provided 5.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these statistics. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this place was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. For example, it performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These statistics are generally reliable measures of the quality of nursing care a nursing home provides.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an A+ short-term care grade, making it one of the few facilities to be awarded several A+ category grades. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The last measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place performed as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 66.8 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents return home.
Facility Inspections
This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed was long-term care, in which this facility was given a B. Believe it or not, this was this facility's weakest category. A nursing home is doing something right when their worst score still rates higher than most nursing homes. When facilities receive this kind of score in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. After considering the impressive nursing hours provided by this nursing home, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 99.18368 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is much higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
