Facility Inspections
On top of performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded high marks in the area of long-term care as well. In fact, we awarded it one of our best scores in that category with a area of A-. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a dangerous illness for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. This nursing home also keeps its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1.27 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at is short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a B-. In the area of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. This nursing home is respectable both in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. It performed decently in this area, with 46 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The final category we analyzed is nursing. We gave it a C in this area. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this area. We scrutinized the levels of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses worked with patients, in computing our score in this area. This facility provides 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is better than average. In computing our scores, we add additional weight to hours performed by more highly skilled nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Lastly, we also factored a few quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. This facility was relatively weak in some of the data points we focus on, with subpar scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care available.
