Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of being a strong facility overall, it also earned A+ health inspections recently. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Inspection grades are based on several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home also was elite in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of A-. Not many nursing homes received a better grade in this area. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility is also strong in the area of short-term care, where it received a grade of B+. It outpaced most facilities in this area. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Turning to the final category, this facility was awarded an extremely favorable nursing score. We gave it a B+ in that category, completing one of our better report cards. Our nursing grade features a host of data points. The most heavily weighted factor is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
