Facility Inspections
The main reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better scores in that category, with an A-. This is a notably better score than the facility's overall grade, which was decent but certainly not elite. Our inspection grades account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies an immediate risk to patient health or safety. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more impressive category grades came in the area of short-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B. It actually outpaced most facilities in this area. In determining these short-term care scores, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. One reason for this facility's strong rating in this area is that it provides a significantly greater volume of physical therapist hours to its patients than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in the nation with 56.6 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this metric.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of C in this category. There are numerous datapoints within this grade. Many of the subcategories are tied to nurse staffing. With 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident daily, this facility surpassed the national average. We also look at the qualifications of these nurses and apply more weight to hours worked by skilled nurses. Finally, our nursing rating also includes applicable quality-based measures. While this facility excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it lagged a bit in some of the datapoints that focused on quality. This facility's nursing score was hurt by its subpar performance in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers. In fact, we found that 17.9 percent of this nursing home's patients experienced pressure ulcers. Since some pressure ulcers could be avoided with good nursing protocols, we reduce a nursing home's nursing score when we find this kind of prevalence of pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our final area, we gave this nursing home a D for our long-term care category. This is the facility's least impressive category score. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. One of the data points we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. Thankfully, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 95.132744 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
