Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Arguably the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Compounding its dominant performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a score of A for our long-term care rating. Facilities that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. One of the datapoints we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the senior population. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

In determining our short-term care scores, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is often a solid measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. It doesn't appear that this facility submitted data regarding its registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.6 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we analyzed is nursing, in which this nursing home was given a grade of C. Even though this is its poorest category score, this is still not a poor grade. The nursing rating features several factors. The most important factor is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a low total compared with most facilities. Lastly, our nursing grades also consider some quality-focused statistics. We especially look at the percentage of patients who suffered pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these metrics are decent indicators of the quality of nursing care, since superior care can reduce these issues.
