Facility Inspections
The primary reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. Its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to be an immediate threat to resident safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's second most favorable category was its short-term care grade, where it received a grade of B-. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of facilities with 49.6 percent of its residents returning home. This is a better rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-, which is a decent grade. When calculating our nursing scores, we analyze both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provided just 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a low total compared to most facilities. While this nursing home ranked poorly in terms of the quantity of nursing care available, it actually performed admirably in some of our quality measures. In fact, it was above average in two of the metrics we assess, with positive reviews for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These statistics are good measures of the quality of nursing care offered since many falls and bed sores are preventable.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the next area, this nursing home was awarded a grade of B- in long-term care, which is generally an acceptable score. If you are looking for anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care scores. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is higher than most nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 2.37 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.
