Nurse Quality
On top of earning a great overall grade, this nursing home also received an elite nursing grade. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of A-. In computing a nursing home's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are seeing patients and the level of skill of those nurses. This nursing home provides an impressive 4.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is among the higher totals in Pennsylvania. Lastly, this place was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also earned excellent inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better grades in that category, with an A-. Our inspection ratings account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category generally have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a favorable long-term care score. Indeed, we gave it an above average grade of B+ in this category. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of providing very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 99.411766 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.29 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed was short-term care. We gave it a C in this area. This is a decent grade in this area. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is generally a fair assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents that were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 30 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below average.
