Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a first rate nursing home overall, this facility also performed well in our inspections category, where it earned a grade of A+. Few places fared as well in this area. Our inspection scores are based on several items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility fared well in the area of short-term care. Indeed, we gave it a score of A- for that area, which turns out to be one of our most dominant scores. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 6.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. In calculating a facility's nursing rating, we consider the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving patients more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we analyzed is long-term care. This nursing home was given a favorable long-term care score this year, with a grade of B-. Although this wasn't as good as several of its other grades, this is nevertheless an acceptable grade for that category. Our long-term care ratings are critical for prospective residents needing non-healthcare services such as personal care. Once we finished looking at the volume of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. We were pleased to discover that this nursing home vaccinates 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. This nursing home keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
