We also want to emphasize that this nursing home excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an A+ in this category. In determining a facility's nursing rating, we assess the number of hours nurses are caring for residents as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provides an incredible 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident daily. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing high levels of care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any facility in the country in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.

The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

The next category we analyzed is short-term care. This nursing home also was given an A+ short-term care grade, rendering it one of the few nursing homes to be awarded several A+ category scores. Short-term care grades are generally employed to judge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final item we looked at in this area is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the nursing home. It fared as well as just about any facility in Hawaii in this area with 59.6 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay patients return home.

Moving on to the next category, this nursing home also excelled in the long-term care category. In fact, we gave it an A- for this area. This wrapped up truly elite profile. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. One of the criteria we considered after this nursing home's above average nursing hours is vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 99.333336 percent of its residents. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for the elderly. This combination proved to be effective as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
