Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of being a strong facility overall, it also earned A+ government inspections in recent years. Its inspections were nearly perfect. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Contributing to its top-shelf profile, this facility also performed well in our short-term care area. In fact, it received a grade of A in the category. Our short-term care ratings are based on a facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a vast scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.9 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. We weighed the skill-level of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses spent with patients, in calculating our rating in this area. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Hawaii in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of turning patients more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Moving on to our final category, this facility received a highly favorable long-term care grade. We gave it a grade of A- in this category, rounding out a straight A profile. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 75.319145 percent of its residents. This is a few points less than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
