Facility Inspections

Grade: A

To go along with its favorable overall score, we awarded this facility an A for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This nursing home received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies an immediate risk to resident safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also awarded this nursing home a score of A- for our short-term care grade. In computing our short-term care scores, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is typically a meaningful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we considered in this area is the percentage of residents that returned home from the facility. We found that 6.2 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. Our nursing grade looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, our nursing ratings also consider quality-based assessments, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is generally a good indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Some falls could be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The last area we looked at was long-term care. This facility was awarded a grade of C for this category. In the category of long-term care, we look at the quantity of care offered by a facility, as opposed to more medically-intensive services. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
