This facility earned an elite short-term care grade. In fact, we gave this nursing home an A+ in this area, which really helped its overall grade. In calculating our short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Maryland in this area with 66.7 percent of its residents returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Inspections is another area where this nursing home excelled. In fact, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections category. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. We weighed the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours the nurses were with residents, in calculating our grade in this category. This nursing home boasts a really impressive 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which a significant portion were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. This is one of the higher totals of nursing hours we found at any nursing home in the Clinton area. Lastly, our nursing grade also includes a few relevant quality-based metrics. Even though this facility excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it lagged behind in certain subcategories that focused on quality. This facility's nursing rating was pulled down by its weak performance in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers.

Historical

This nursing home's weakest area was long-term care, which is the final area we assessed. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this area. In spite of a few solid grades in other categories, this score is still of a concern so we felt obligated to point it out. For prospective residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. On top of providing solid levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. These scores were clearly more favorable than a few of its other data points in the category. To our surprise, this place also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 3.21 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad since it had some more complicated patients.
