Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is it received a very impressive inspection grade. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In this category, we gave this nursing home an A. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this category tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility also performed well in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a score of A. Very few nursing homes received a better grade in this category. With our short-term care assessment, we endeavor to forge a meaningful gauge for rehabilitation. In doing so, we look at a nursing home's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, based on the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that 6.3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility also was given a first-rate long-term care score. This actually ended up being this nursing home's third most impressive category grade. In that category, this facility received a grade of A-. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are kept in good health. On top of considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The last area we analyzed is this nursing home's weakest category. Nevertheless, even its worst category would actually be a strength for many nursing homes. In fact, we awarded it a favorable grade of B for our nursing category. Our nursing grade analyzes the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home averages 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
