Nurse Quality

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. In calculating a nursing home's nursing grade, we look at the quantity of hours nurses are caring for patients and the level of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home averages 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place performed very well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this nursing home also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on its recent government inspections. We gave it an B+ for that category. Our inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category typically have few severe deficiencies. Although this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

In addition, this facility also was awarded favorable long-term care grades this year. Indeed, we awarded them one of our better grades in that category, with a grade of B. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 95.85253 percent of its residents, which is more than most nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Our next area is short-term care, in which we gave this nursing home a C in this category. In crafting our short-term care scores, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.
