Facility Inspections
We also would like to emphasize the fact that this facility has received excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Our inspection grades are based on several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered severe. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
We also would like to point out the fact that this facility was awarded an elite score of A- in our short-term care area. In forming our short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, we found that this nursing home provided respectable levels of physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the country with 54 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most facilities.
Nurse Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. The nursing rating analyzes quite a few datapoints, however, the paramount one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. With 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home surpassed the overwhelming majority of facilities. Lastly, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is often an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our next category, this facility was given a high-end long-term care rating. We awarded it a grade of B+ in that category, finishing off one of our finer report cards. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to considering the impressive volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the facility's record for vaccinations. This nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. This combination proved to be successful as this facility also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 1.23 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
