Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

This facility received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them an A+ in this category. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a good inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home also received a positive long-term care grade. In fact, we gave it a B+ in that category, which is one of our better. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Nursing grades are largely associated with the nursing home's nurse staffing. This place provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home surprisingly fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In fact, it performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Turning to our fourth category, this nursing home really didn't fare very well. With a very poor grade of F in short-term care, this was its weakest category grade. Our short-term care grade is often employed to score a facility's rehabilitation services. To provide highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must offer better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. It looks like this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we assessed the number of residents that eventually returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
