Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In this area, we gave this facility an A. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Additionally, this nursing home also was given favorable long-term care grades in our assessment. Indeed, we awarded them one of our stronger scores in that category, with a grade of B+. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. One of the statistics we considered after nursing hours is vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a great way to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the aged 65 and up population. The last datapoint we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 4.74 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this number may be skewed for some facilities based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

This facility was given a favorable short-term care grade as well. We awarded it one of our better grades in that category with a grade of B. In crafting these short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to formulate a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who returned home from the facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Our final category is nursing, in which we gave this facility a grade of B- in this area. The nursing rating includes quite a few subcategories, many of which are tied to nursing hours. Based on the data, it looks like this facility provides an impressive 4 hours per resident each day. This is more nursing care than most nursing homes provide. In calculating our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
