Medical Staff Hours Per Patient (2019)
Nurse Quality
In addition to a phenomenal overall grade, this facility also received A+ nursing grade. The nursing score includes many factors, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This place provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by both of these figures. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With under five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared as well as any nursing home South Carolina in this category.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home was given an elite grade of A in our long-term care category. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are kept in good health. In addition to offering very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This statistic is also much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Facility Inspections
This facility has had near flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. This facility was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
In our last category, this facility also was given an excellent short-term care score, with an A. This rounded out an elite profile. In our short-term care assessment, we seek to create a meaningful measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This place offered more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. The final item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better than most facilities in this area with 52.2 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
