Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this nursing home excelled in long-term care. We awarded them an A+ in this category. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. In addition to considering the impressive level of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the nursing home's vaccination record. By way of example, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.23 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was given an A+ for its short-term care grade. Short-term care grades are generally used to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the nation in this area with 67.7 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. There are a number of factors within this category. Many of these factors relate to levels of nurse staffing. With 4.7 hours of nursing care per patient per day, this facility surpassed the overwhelming majority of facilities. Finally, this facility also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is often a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by offering better nursing care and having a protocol of moving patients even once per day.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive category grades, this nursing home also excelled in inspections, where it received an A. This wrapped up a straight A report card for this place. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
