Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

To pair with its relatively modest overall score, we gave this facility a grade of A- for its inspection grade. This score is far better than its overall score. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we had favorable view of this nursing home's inspections.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this nursing home's better category scores came in the area of long-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a B. It actually performed better than most facilities in this area. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Turning to the category of short-term care, this facility was awarded just a D in that area. Our short-term care scores are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final metric we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 5.6 percent of its patients returning home. This was well below the national average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The last area we scored is nursing. Sadly, it received an F for this category, which is a very poor grade. This is obviously a significant disappointment. We assessed the licensure of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses were with residents, in computing our score in this area. This nursing home averaged a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This place performed well in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be measures of the quality of nursing care.
