One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Our inspection scores are based on items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Contributing to its profile, this facility also earned a score of B+ for its long-term care rating. This is an above average grade in this category. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 84 percent of its patients. This is a few points lower than we were hoping for but still a respectable percentage. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, at least this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Despite having 1.74 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.

This nursing home received an impressive short-term care score as well. We gave it one of our better grades in that area with a score of B+. Our short-term care scores are arguably more critical for people requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in this area with 68.5 percent of its patients returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.

The final area we graded ended up being this nursing home's poorest area. However, even in its worst category we still awarded it an acceptable grade of C for our nursing category. Our nursing category weighs quite a few factors, most of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home averages 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these subcategories. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this subcategory. This is generally a reliable indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving residents more often.
