Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this facility one of our better grades in the area of short-term care, where it received an A-. This is far better than its overall grade, which was certainly not elite. With our short-term care grade, we strive to create a sound measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at the nursing home's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we assessed in this area, which was the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 65.6 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
We also wanted to note that this nursing home earned an impressive grade of B+ in our nursing category. Our nursing grade weighs a handful of datapoints, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of moving patients more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality
This facility's second least favorable score was long-term care, where it received a grade of just D in that area. This is a well below average score. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in this category may not provide the kind of consistent around the clock care that some other nursing homes offer. One of the statistics we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Candidly, we were a bit alarmed this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to a relatively low 88.7324 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this place was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.41 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This was its best feature in this category.
Moving on our last category of inspections, this nursing home received a grade that's as bad as it gets. Unfortunately, with an F in the inspection category, this facility's overall grade was adversely affected. When a facility has this poor of an inspection grade, you should look for severe deficiencies on its inspection report. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to the well being of residents. This particular facility was assessed one category G through L deficiency, which are among the more serious categories of deficiencies. These categories indicate that the deficiencies uncovered by inspectors had potential to pose actual harm to patients. Finally, this facility also received 7 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
