We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This facility was given impressive marks in the area of long-term care as well. Consequently, we gave it one of our strongest scores in that category with a score of A. Facilities that receive this type of score in this category tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are kept in good health. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 98.91775 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. The nursing score includes a host of factors. The most important one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics. While this facility got dinged a bit for nursing hours, it actually excelled in a few of these quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this metric. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving patients even once per day.

This facility's least impressive area is short-term care, which is the last area we looked at. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area. In spite of some favorable scores in other areas, this grade is still somewhat alarming so we would like to to make a note of it. Short-term care scores are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a wide scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
