Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also gave this nursing home a grade of A for our long-term care grade. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. When calculating our nursing scores, we look at both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This figure is far below average. Finally, nursing scores also factor in quality-based measures, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this place actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is often a good indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Some falls could be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to the next area, this nursing home really did not perform well. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in that category, this was clearly this facility's worst area. Short-term care ratings are based on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. It looks like this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. The last measure we assessed in this area is the number of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3.6 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
