Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the few facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. Our inspection scores are based on several pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent government inspections. Facilities that score well in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality
This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B. We scrutinized the skill-level of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours the nurses were with residents, in computing our score in this area. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of turning residents at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the next area, this nursing home really did not perform well. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in that category, this was clearly this facility's worst area. Short-term care ratings are based on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. It looks like this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. The last measure we assessed in this area is the number of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
