Nurse Quality
In addition to receiving a poor overall grade, we also gave this nursing home weak grades across the board in the various categories. In fact, it received a grade of just D for its nursing grade, which was its best grade. We scrutinized the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses spent with patients, in determining our grade in this category. This facility provided 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is below average. Lastly, we also looked at some quality measures in computing our nursing ratings. This nursing home was above average in two of the major datapoints we considered, with solid scores for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care offered.
Facility Inspections
This place earned just a D in the area of inspections. Unfortunately, this was its second best grade. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. We suggest you pay close attention to the level of severity of those deficiencies. This particular nursing home had a category J through K deficiency, which rank among the worst categories of deficiencies. Finally, this facility also received 4 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we gave this facility an F in the category of long-term care. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. After we finished assessing the quantity of nursing care, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to learn that this nursing home vaccinates 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.19 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we graded is short-term care, where this facility was given a very poor score in this area as well. It received an F for this category, which is obviously a major disappointment. In determining our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is often a fair assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. With its poor score in this area, we were not stunned to find this nursing home provides far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. The last measure we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 42.9 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
