While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our highest scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an immediate risk to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

We also awarded this facility a middle of the pack grade in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.33 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure was less favorable than its other scores in this category.

Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. When determining our nursing scores, we analyze both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provided just 2.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This nursing home was above average in two of the metrics we focus on, with good marks for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are typically good indicators of the quality of nursing care provided.

Short-term Care Quality

The final area we looked at is short-term care. This facility was given a very poor grade of F in that area. Short-term care grades are often used to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. As you might expect, we learned that this facility provides substantially less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than the typical facility. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This was not a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 40.5 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most facilities, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
