Focused Care at Humble

While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid nursing homes that have a long list of deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Unfortunately, this facility only earned a D for its short-term care score, which happens to be one of its more respectable category grades. In our short-term care rating, we attempt to forge a sound barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Given its grade in this category, we weren't surprised to learn that this nursing home is well below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the data we looked at. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

This nursing home ended up receiving a a terrible grade in our long-term care area. It received a lowly F in this area. If you are seeking anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care grades. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid percentage. Surprisingly, this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.

The next area we assessed is nursing, in which this nursing home was given a bottom of the barrel score in this area as well. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this category, which is obviously somewhat alarming. In calculating a facility's nursing score, we consider the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents and the level of skill of the nurses. This nursing home offered only 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is not a very impressive figure. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this facility's nursing rating significantly.
