We want to point out that this nursing home really outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best scores in this area with an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. Unfortunately, this nursing home was assessed a category L deficiency, which was unexpected given its inspection rating. This category means the government inspectors identified a widespread deficiency putting resident health or safety in imminent danger. While other aspects of this nursing home's inspection report were favorable, we have some reservations.

One of this nursing home's more favorable category scores was in the category of long-term care. This turned out to be its second most favorable category. In that category, we gave this nursing home a C. Our long-term care grades are more critical for patients needing more conventional services related to personal care. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is more than the average nursing home. This nursing home also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Turning to the category of short-term care, this nursing home was awarded a grade of just D in that area. Short-term care scores are crucial for people looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a wide scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its grade in this category, we weren't surprised to learn that this facility was well below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Frankly, this was what we expected here. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

The next category we scored is nursing, which proved to be this nursing home's weakest category. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area, which is certainly a major disappointment. The nursing grade assesses a handful of components, but the most important one is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This figure is far below average. To pair with its below average totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place had really poor marks in many of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing falls which led to major injury. This facility was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is concerning in light of the fact that so many falls could be prevented with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a poor nursing score.
