Facility Inspections
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a B- for our inspections rating. In fact, the facility received very impressive inspection report this year. Inspection ratings are tied to many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key item to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a risk to resident safety. This nursing home was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to patient health or safety. Finally, CMS flagged this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. This is not what you want to see. We advise you to direct your search elsewhere.
Short-term Care Quality
We were also pleasantly surprised to learn that this facility received a reasonably solid short-term care grade in our assessment. We awarded it a grade of B- in that category. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is generally a solid measure of a facility's rehabilitation. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last item we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. This place fared well in this metric with 65 percent of its patients returning home. This proved to be a big boost to its grade in this category.
Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its nursing grade. There are a host of datapoints within this category. Most of the criteria reflect staffing levels. This nursing home provides 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. In addition to ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor marks in the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed was long-term care. This nursing home was given a bottom of the barrel grade of F in this area. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means the nursing home did not perform well in our quality measures relating to patient care. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. We were a bit concerned this facility administered the vaccine to only 89.74359 percent of its patients. The last statistic we assessed was its hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 1.8 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is a higher hospitalization rate than the average nursing home, but it is not as bad as we expected.
