The main reason this facility received a decent overall score is its impeccable health inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an A-. This is a notably better grade than the facility's overall score, which was decent but not in the elite range. Inspection ratings are based on several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this area have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

In addition, we also wanted to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home was given strong long-term care marks in this assessment. We awarded them one of our better scores in this area, with a B+. This turned out to be the facility's second highest score. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 97.765366 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a dangerous ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.29 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Turning to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing rating. We gave this facility an D. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home provides 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. In addition to receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients suffering pressure ulcers and found this facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many pressure ulcers are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic dragged down this facility's nursing rating significantly.

The last area we rated is short-term care, is this facility's least impressive category. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. Our short-term care scores are crucial for individuals looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of skilled nursing. This means a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Surprisingly, this nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. Clearly its shortcomings were more quality-based. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare nearly as well here as it did in our staffing measures. In fact, we found that just 25.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
