Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave it an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively insignificant. This facility was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received a favorable grade in our long-term care category. We awarded this nursing home a better than average grade of B in this category. When nursing homes receive this type of score in long-term care it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents out of the hospital. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.39 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility received its third best category grade in the area of short-term care. We gave this facility a B- in this category, which is a respectable grade. In determining these short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The final measure we considered in this category is the percentage of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed respectably with 46.7 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The last category we graded was nursing. Sadly, it received a lowly F in this area, which is an abysmal score. This is certainly a significant concern. There are numerous data points included in this area. Many of the factors reflect nurse staffing. This facility offered a meager 2.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is not a very impressive figure. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found this facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric.
