Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this nursing home's overall grade, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that category with an A-. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid nursing homes with a list of deficiencies flagged. This place received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facilities next best area was long-term care. We gave it a grade of B- in this area. This is essentially a middle of the road score in this category. In calculating our long-term care grades, we analyze the personal care received by the nursing home's patients. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid statistic. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.94 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility is not too far off the national average.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to this facility's poor nursing grade where it received an F. Our nursing grade focuses on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of training of those nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. This nursing home offered only 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. This place also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based metrics to pair with its weak nursing hours. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than double the national average in this metric.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we looked at is short-term care. This facility received a bottom of the barrel grade of F in this area. Our short-term care scores are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the number of residents that eventually returned home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 41.1 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below average.
