Registered Staff Hours
In addition to being a respectable nursing home overall, this facility really excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Few facilities performed better in this category. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we also wanted to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home was given impressive long-term care marks in this assessment. We gave them one of our more favorable grades in this category, with a grade of B. This turned out to be the facility's second best score. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 48.68805 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be somewhat lower than we expected but still a decent percentage. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Does this page answer your questions about Fairlane Gardens Nursing and Rehab at Reading?
The next highest grade we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of C. Our nursing rating looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of licensure of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place provides only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a somewhat concerning figure as it is well below the national average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place surprisingly fared better in some of the quality measures we assessed. In fact, it scored well in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we rated was short-term care. We awarded this facility a D for the area of short-term care, leaving this as its weakest category. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to judge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide good rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The final item we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 5 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
